This is a big book, a huge book, a massive tome - it is one of those books that would cause
grievous bodily harm if dropped upon the unsuspecting foot.
But don't let that deter you - from the first confession of murder on an 'innocent, yet unknown red-hair man' to the final gripping chapter you'll find yourself reluctant to place your bookmark between the pages, even after midnight has ticked away and a new work day is approaching.
Novels set in Victorian times don't normally grab my attention, yet I was drawn into the compelling story of Edward Glyver, a man of complex and sometimes quite unlikable character with a past shrouded in mystery, who is driven to murder.
As the tale evolves, both Edward and Phoebus Daunt are rivals struggling to out-manoeuvre
each other. Lord Tansor is childless and has yet to choose an heir. A prize both Edward and Phoebus pursue. Throughout their epic battle, including the fight for mysterious and beautiful Emily Carteret, stories of murder, revenge, cruel betrayal, and delusion are revealed.
With so many
twists and turns, and so much at stake, fuelling a competition that can only end
in tragedy for one of them.
